Our Sid

Our Sid

Pops and his family got the last boat from Mauritius to Leeds in the 6os, taking just over 2 months. Their family had a strong background in steel in Mauritius and chose Yorkshire for its many factories and mills.

The family integrated into all things Yorkshire and Pops became a huge character in Leeds. Pops then started his own family in Chapeltown.

Chapeltown gave Pops a sense of familiarity, intergrating into the West Indian community, reminding him of his childhood in Mauritius, a very similar mentality to Island life.

Pops was a regular in some of the domino houses where he was know to everyone as "Sid or Siddy"
